Unlike employees in traditional corporate structures who may have designated teams for support, entrepreneurs often find themselves alone in decision-making. The pressure to maintain a professional image makes it difficult to express vulnerabilities. A study published in the Harvard Business Review found that half of CEOs reported feelings of loneliness in their roles, and of this group, 61% believed it negatively impacted their performance.
According to a report by the National Institute of Mental Health, entrepreneurs are 50% more likely to suffer from mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression compared to the general population. The psychological burden of constant decision-making, financial unpredictability, and performance pressures can significantly impact long-term well-being.

Finding The Strength to Lead Through Vulnerability
A senior leader in the corporate sector sought coaching to navigate the challenges of leadership. Through candid sessions, she opened up about the pressures of her role until one day, her world shifted dramatically when she was diagnosed with a critical illness.
The diagnosis brought an overwhelming mix of anger and fear. As her coach, I had to detach from my own emotions while holding space for hers. Often, when faced with someone’s pain, we instinctively sympathise or judge. But in reality, emotions are deeply personal. Tears can signify sorrow or resilience, fear or relief.
During our sessions, a core realisation emerged: her inner struggle was not just about the illness but about how she would be perceived. She had only confided in her manager and was hesitant to share it with her team. She did not want to be seen as an object of pity. She wanted to be seen as a leader who continued to inspire.
As a coach, I offered her the space to engage in honest, unguarded conversations. She needed to process her anger and sadness, and I used active listening techniques to help her untangle those emotions. I then asked her to envision what her future might look like beyond the diagnosis—how she saw herself leading, growing, and contributing. By guiding her to see vulnerability as a strength, we ultimately reshaped her leadership identity. The journey of coaching allowed her to process these emotions, helping her to embrace vulnerability as a strength rather than a weakness.
